Grand Circuit Report: Week of May 4, 2008

This Week: Freehold Grand Circuit, Freehold Raceway, Freehold, New Jersey

Schedule of events: The Grand Circuit continues its season opening stop at Freehold Raceway this Friday (May 9) with the $110,000 (est.) Lady Suffolk for 3-year-old filly trotters. The Saturday (May 10) program features the $160,000 (est.) Dexter Cup Final for 3-year-old colt trotters and the $145,000 (est.) Helen Dancer Memorial for 3-year-old filly pacers.

Last Time: The 2008 Grand Circuit season commenced last Saturday (May 3) at Freehold with a trio of $20,552 eliminations for the Dexter Cup.

The opening elimination went to Robert Key’s First Pleasurelane (Ron Pierce) in a time of 2:00.1. The Lindy Lane-Pleasure First colt finished 4-3/4 lengths ahead of Handoverthesweets (Jeff Gregory), with Arsonman (Ray Schnittker) finishing third. Richard Gillock conditions the winner.

In the second elimination, Nordic Lindy Stable’s Oh So White (Andy Miller) brushed three-wide to the lead at the three-quarter pole and then drew off to an easy 8-3/4 length victory over Crownprince Volo (Brian Cross) in a time of 1:58.2. They Took The Bar (Ray Schnittker) was third. The winner, a son of Self Possessed-Sara Hall, is trained by Julie Miller.

The third and final elimination went to Christina Takter, John Fielding, Falkbolagen Ab, and Order By Stable’s Holiday Credit (Ron Pierce) with a wire-to-wire triumph in 1:58.3. The Credit Winner-Lady Holiday colt, trained by Jimmy Takter, romped by eight lengths over Ringside Muscle (Cat Manzi). Built By Lindy was third for Kenny Kidd.

Grand Circuit Driving Standings: Ron Pierce is the early leader in the Grand Circuit standings with two winners. Andy Miller is in second with one victory.

Looking ahead: Following this season opening stop, the first of 20 on the 2008 schedule, Grand Circuit action will resume in late June at Hoosier Park in Indiana and The Meadowlands in New Jersey.
