Biography

Richard “Rick” Kane is currently the Director of Racing/Racing Secretary at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania since 2011. His career in harness racing began in 1971 in the Hinsdale (N.H.) Raceway race office. In the following six decades his path has taken him to 17 tracks and nine states. In 2006, he was part of the initial team that got Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino and Racetrack off the ground. While there he created the highly popular stakes conditions for the Super Stakes events consisting of the Battle of the Brandywine, Colonial Trot and Valley Forge. Each event had two consolations along with the main final event with selection to each level being determined by the current seasonal earnings. This would make it unnecessary to hold eliminations in the prior week. He is a past president of the American Harness Racing Secretaries Association. His family got into harness racing in the early 1960’s while still in the dairy farm business in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. His late brother, Bobby, was a leading driver in New England when he and father, Steve, made the move to Hinsdale in 1966. Kane received an Associate Degree in Communications with a major in Television Production in 1973 from Grahm Junior College in Boston, Massachusetts. During his studies, he wrote and directed two original dramas for WINR-TV, the college closed circuit TV station. In 1984-85 he ventured away from racing when he and a partner opened a bar in New England called “Cheers.”
