In 2023 they put an agricultural conservation easement on their entire property to protect it in perpetuity as a Forever Farm. Marean is a director of the University of Maine (Orono) Board of Agriculture. Former chairperson of the Land for Maine’s Future Board, he was appointed by the governor. Marean served four years in the Maine House of Representatives (2005-2008) and was re-elected to the House in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. In between those terms, he was the spokesman for the industry at the Statehouse as its lobbyist. He also served as a selectman in his community and is a corporator of Gorham Savings Bank. The Mareans received the Distinguished Service Award from the MHHA in 2003. Don received the Appreciation Award from Harness Horsemen International in 2013 and in 2020 received the President’s Award from USHWA. In 2015, he was elected to the board of trustees of the American Horse Council in Washington, D.C. In 2022 the Governor of Maine appointed him to the Maine Harness Race Commission. Don serves as the USTA ex officio director and president of Standardbred Transition Alliance.
