Biography

For Mike Kimelman, a profession in anything other than harness racing was out of the question. His grandfather, Oscar Kimelman, established the world-renowned Blue Chip Farms in Wallkill, N.Y., and when Mike was in the fifth grade his family moved there, and harness horses became his way of life—so much so, that he opted not to go to college but instead pursue a career with Standardbreds. Out of school, Kimelman worked for top horsemen such as Billy Popfinger, Steve Demas and Billy Herman, and in 1984 he opened a public stable—the realization of a lifelong dream of becoming a professional trainer-driver. Over the years, with a small stable and a limited amount of starts, he drove winners of nearly 500 races and handled some very nice horses. After childhood friend and schoolmate Tom Grossman purchased Blue Chip Farms in 2001, Kimelman gave up his full-time stable to become president of the farm and served in that capacity through 2014. He has been involved in all aspects of the Standardbred business since the mid-1980s, and has become a force in harness racing, especially in the breeding business in New York. At times he still dons his colors and can get around the racetrack with the best of them. For many years he has also been a valued member of the board of directors of Goshen Historic Track, where he serves on many committees. He is always on call, and has been dedicated to the preservation of Goshen Historic Track. He and his wife, Sally, have two children, Oscar and Olivia.
