Christopher McErlean
Biography

Christopher McErlean has been vice president of racing for Penn Entertainment, Inc., (PENN) since January 2007, overseeing the company’s 10 pari-mutuel horse racing facilities (including USTA members Bangor Raceway, Dayton Raceway, Plainridge Park and The Meadows) as well as its joint-venture property (USTA member Freehold Raceway), plus four off-track wagering locations and a national account-wagering operation. In 2023, PENN racing entities conducted nearly 1000 live racing dates and handled over $1 billion in live and simulcast import and export wagers. A racing fan since the age of nine, McErlean started in the sport as a public handicapper at the age of 14 for the Delaware County Daily Times and gained his first racetrack work experience as an intern in the publicity department at Brandywine Raceway from 1985-1989. He graduated from the University of Scranton in 1989 with a B.S. degree in economics/finance and earned a M.B.A. degree in marketing from Farleigh Dickinson University in 1991. Following his graduation from college McErlean was the executive assistant at Harness Tracks of America (HTA) and then joined the Meadowlands Racetrack in March 1992 as the director of marketing and simulcasting. During his nearly 15-year tenure he held multiple leadership positions, culminating as the vice president of racing operations for the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority’s two racetracks – The Meadowlands and Monmouth Park. McErlean is the only person to serve as both president of HTA and Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) and currently serves as a board member of the TRA, Thoroughbred Racing and Protective Bureau and the Equibase Management Committee. He and his wife, Michele, have two grown daughters, Maura and Cara.
