BiographyChris McErlean has been vice president of racing for Penn National Gaming, Inc., since January 2007, overseeing the company’s pari-mutuel facilities (including USTA members Bangor Raceway, Dayton Raceway, Plainridge Park and The Meadows), three joint-venture properties (including USTA member Freehold Raceway), four off-track wagering locations and a national account-wagering operation. A racing fan since the age of nine, McErlean started in the sport as a public handicapper at the age of 14 for the Delaware County Daily Times and served as an intern in the publicity department at Brandywine Raceway from 1985-1989. He graduated from the University of Scranton in 1989 with a B.S. degree in economics/finance and earned an M.B.A. degree in marketing from Farleigh Dickinson University in 1991. From June 1989 to March 1992, he was the executive assistant at Harness Tracks of America. He joined the Meadowlands in March 1992 as the director of marketing and simulcasting, and during his tenure held the titles of assistant GM for marketing and simulcasting, associate GM for marketing and development, vice president and GM and vice president of racing operations for the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. McErlean served as president of Harness Tracks of America from 2002-2004. He is a past president of the Thoroughbred Racing Association and a board member of the Thoroughbred Racing and Protective Bureau and Equibase Management Committee. He and his wife, Michele, have two children, Maura and Cara.
