Leonard Calderone
Biography

Lenny Calderone is the racing services manager and track announcer at Plainridge Park Casino. He grew up on Long Island, N.Y., attending the races with his father at Yonkers and Roosevelt raceways before breaking into the business as a caretaker for the Lou Meittinis Stable in the late 1970s. An internship during his junior year at college in 1981 paved the way to full-time employment at Pompano Park, which served as the launching pad to his career in harness racing. At Pompano, he was a member of the Florida Chapter of the U.S. Harness Writers Association while working in the capacity of assistant publicity director and later as back-up announcer. He has worked in various capacities at many different tracks, including co-owning several Standardbreds. A local standout baseball player at North Babylon High School, he was fortunate to receive tryouts with two professional teams as a teenager—the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers. However, winning a division of the Battle of Broadcasters Race at Monticello Raceway in 2002 and an invitation to be the guest announcer for a Boston Red Sox-Kansas City Royals baseball game in 2012 are considered to be some of his most fun and memorable moments. Calderone graduated from St. Thomas University (formerly Biscayne College) in Miami, Fla., with a B.A. degree in sports administration. He is married and has three children, Jennifer, Amber and Nicholas.
