Biography

Sam Lilly is chairperson of USTA District 5. Introduced to the sport as a child by his father at Coles County (Ill.) Fairgrounds, Lilly rejoined the industry in advertising and writing in the early 1980s and began racing and raising Standardbreds later that decade. He was voted Illinois Harness Horseman of the Year. He is a member and former vice president of the Illinois Harness Horsemen’s Association and former director/secretary of the Illinois Standardbred Owners and Breeders Association. He is also a director and vice president of the DuPage County (Ill.) Farm Bureau. Lilly earned a B.S. degree in education and an M.A. degree in history from Eastern Illinois University, as well as a Ph.D. degree at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He is president of Lilly Associates, Inc., dba Learning Resources Institute and Lilly Racing Stable, Inc. (Standardbred breeding, raising and racing) and is a former college professor, real estate broker, state government commission director, professional speaker and trainer. Lilly is married to Ellen DeJulio Lilly, Ed.D., and has three children, Scott, Rick and Catherine.
