YOUTH MEMBERSHIP

Are you a youth that has an interest in Harness Racing or Standardbreds in general? Then this is the place to be! We have all sorts of programs available for youth 17 and under. Get involved in harness racing or find out about competing with your Standardbred by reading below.

Did you know membership for youth 17 and under is free? It is! All we need is a completed application. If you would like to print an application off please click here. The membership falls under the USTA Standardbred Equine Program (SEP). If you don’t find the answers to your questions here or if you need more information, please contact SEP. They can be reached at 614-224-2291 ext.3260.

The youth membership allows you to race, own, and breed Standardbreds. You also get to take advantage of other SEP programs. Here are the basics on a variety of ways you can get involved:

  • 4-H and Youth Activities
SEP works with youth advisors to encourage involvement with Standardbreds. Free literature is available to help get a club started, breed projects, and events. SEP also offers support to groups involving youth and Standabreds like 4-H and FFA.
  • Standardbred Performance Certificate
This certificate provides proof of proprietorship and is perfect for non-racing events that require proof of registration. These are available for $15 each. Remember, though, if you enroll your horse in the Standardbred Activities Database, you will receive a certificate for free!

Here are some additional benefits for youth interested in Standardbreds:

  • Youth Contests: Do you like to take photos? Maybe you like to create art involving Standardbreds. Do you find yourself writing about Standardbreds? This contest is for you! The USTA offers an annual contest for several creative categories where you can compete for excellent prizes. Check our website for details on the next contest.
  • Standardbred Rally: Rally ‘round the Standarbred! This will be a summer weekend rally for 4H club members and their advisors. There will be games, competitions, and opportunities to learn. Information will be provided on harness racing and horse care, and will help you develop skills in working with Standardbreds.
  • Standardbred Adoption and Placement: Many individuals and organizations help Standardbreds find new homes when they are no longer competitive on the track. In addition, many Standardbreds make excellent 4H project horses. SEP assists these groups with identification, placement assistance, and matching available horses with prospective owners.
  • Career Opportunities: SEP can provide you with general information on jobs within the industry. Whether you are interested in a career as a driver or trainer, racetrack official, or as a breeder, SEP can supply you with more information and, possibly, internship information.
  • Educational Opportunities: If you or your family participate in the Standardbred industry, you may be eligible for a scholarship for continuing education. Please contact SEP for more information!
  • Drivers License Application fee waived: If you are a current member of the USTA and are currently active in 4H or FFA at the time of your license application the fees are waived! The waived fees include the application fee and the test fee.
