FOAL REGISTRATION

Do you need to register a horse?

In order to register a foal we need the following items:

  • A completed registration application- please be sure to provide the color, sex, and complete foaling date. The application also includes a section to provide the markings for the foal. Please be sure the drawn markings match the written description. The application must be signed by the recorded owner of the dam at the time of foaling, authorized agent, or current lessee of the dam. If an application is needed they can be found on our web site. Click here
  • A signed mating certificate- Please note: A signed mating certificate must be on file by 12/31 of the foaling year or a late fee may be assessed.
  • Registration fee
Within 4 months of the foaling:   $132
Between 4 months and 12/31 of the foaling year:   $165

**Payments can be made by check, money order, or credit card (Visa, Master Card or American Express)

What does the registration fee include?

It includes registration of your horse, DNA typing, and freeze branding or tattooing.

Can I fax the information in to register my foal?

Unfortunately not. We need the original mating certificate to be on file.

How do I name a foal?

The registration application provides a place to indicate your name choices. Names are limited to 18 characters and four words. That includes spaces, dashes(-), and apostrophes(‘) so you may need to get creative if you have a longer name choice.

What if I can not decide on a name for my foal?

Foals can be registered as UNNAMED. Please mark your name choice as UNNAMED on the registration application. The horse will need to be named, though, before January 1 of the two year old year or a fee will be assessed.

Can I check name choices before sending them in?

Name choices can definitely be checked before they are submitted. Please contact our Customer Service Department and they will be happy to assist you. They can be reached at 877-800-USTA ext. 3 or customerservice@ustrotting.com. You can also check name choices on our web site. Click here to check names on-line.

Tips on checking names

  • Names are limited to 18 characters and four words including spaces, dashes and apostrophes.
  • Name choices that sound like a name already in use are not allowed. For example, if a horse is already registered by the name Aladdin we can not accept the name choice Aladinn.
  • Names of outstanding horses are taken forever and can not be used again.
  • Registered farms may reserve names for their use only. These names can only be used with the permission of the farm. For example, HANOVER and PAN are reserved farm names.
  • Some names are reserved for a family line. The sire or dam must have the family name in their own name before it can used for the foal. For example, the names DRAGON, BUNNY, and NIA are family names.
  • Names become available 15 years after a horse last raced or produced a foal. If a horse is recorded as deceased before it races or is used for breeding the name becomes available. If a horse never races and is not used for breeding the name becomes available 15 years after the horse was born.

What if I need to transfer the ownership of the foal?

The registration application has a transfer of ownership section, located on the back of the application. If you did not own the dam at the time of foaling the transfer section needs to be completed. There is not an additional fee due to transfer the ownership when it is being processed as part of a registration. The recorded owner(s) of the dam must sign the transfer section and the registration application, section 16.

The foal wasn't sold but the ownership of the foal is not the same as the dam. Do I still need to transfer?

Yes. The recorded owner of the foal is automatically listed as the owner of the dam at the time of foaling unless a transfer is submitted.

When will my foal need to be DNA typed?

The foal will need to be DNA typed before it races or produces a foal. DNA typing is not a registration requirement. Please keep in mind that testing typically takes 5-10 business days once the lab receives a sample. The USTA encourages you to get the foal DNA typed and freeze branded/tattooed as soon as possible.

How do I get my foal freeze branded/tattooed?

Please contact the ID Technician that serves your area. They will come prepared to freeze brand or tattoo your horse. They will also be collecting a DNA sample for parentage verification. Beginning with foals born in 2001 and later the DNA sample is collected when the foal is marked. Owners no longer have to mess with waiting for the kit to arrive, collecting the sample, and mailing it to the DNA lab. The ID Technician will take care of all that for you! Please click here for a listing of ID Technicians.

How do I know if you have received my paperwork?

Our Customer Service Department typically works on paperwork within 1-2 days of receipt. You can contact the Customer Service Department at 877-800-USTA ext. 3 or customerservice@ustrotting.com for an updated status on your paperwork. Please remember- The deadline for foal applications is 12/31. This is an extremely busy time of year and the turn around time may exceed a week or more. Be assured, though, that our Customer Service team will work very hard at getting foal applications processed and completed as fast as possible.

I have a horse that is over one year of age. Can it still be registered?

Yes it can! We just need a completed application, mating certificate, and the registration fee. A late fee will be assessed because the paperwork was not submitted by the deadline. For foals born in 2002 and later the total due to register a late foal is $415.
