OONA-12yo red bay, pacing mare, 15.1h Rides and drives but has been out to pasture for about a year. Sweet, a VERY easy keeper who ambles, paces, & trots. We are working on reschooling her in driving as we feel that she is best suited for that. Oona won grand champion driving horse at the Withlacootchie 30 mile Competitive Trail Ride/Drive two years ago so she should come back into condition quickly. Best suited for a confident rider or has experience in driving.
KHAN--21yo bay gelding, retired from the track. No physical issues or vices. Rides and drives, started in training level dressage. Plenty of energy - good endurance prospect. Khan needs a confident, experienced/intermediate rider as he can be a bit strong but has been ridden by confident kids in a lesson environment.
PAGAN--23yo pacing gelding with a growth on his neck that has tested just fine. Big and sweet; was formerly shown & jumped. He has put on weight, is regaining his spunk & can really kick up his heels in the paddock! He has been ridden a couple of times & we think he'll be fine for light trail riding.
DEALER--14yo Standardbred gelding, dark bay/black, 15.1h, raced as a trotter but has 5 gaits under saddle. Handsome boy, easy to ride, (goes nicely in a hackamore) excellent trail horse, very sweet personality. Has loads of personality along with some leg injuries that need plenty of time to heal but we hope to bring him back to light trail soundness some time next year.

Ohio

Payne Rd Scooter: Strong, muscular 15.3h bay 3yo pacing gelding. He is unraced, but has close to 12 months in harness. Scooter has a slight bowed tendon, sustained as a two year old, that should disappear as he matures. He is sound and should be suitable for most any discipline. He has lots of character and personality. Scooter is a very fluid mover and should rack easily or could trot, if desired. He is like a piece of clay that can be molded to fit whatever goal is desired. Scooter is at our Laura location. His adoption fee is $400.
Sammy: Flashy, nearly black 7yo 15.2h Standardbred pacing gelding. He has three white ankles, a large intelligent eye, and a long neck with a trim throat. Sammy is a one owner horse that had suspensory problems during his career, but was always given the necessary treatment and time off. He has some freeze marks along his splint bones in front and his suspensories are a little thick at the ankles, but he moves quite sound and should be suitable for most forms of pleasure riding and driving. Sammy has been ridden once and did very well. He is very easy to handle, gets along well with other horses, and enjoys attention. Sammy is at our Laura location. His adoption fee is $300.
Charmer Dynasty: Attractive dark brown 15.3h 6yo Standardbred trotting mare. She is big-boned mare with a large intelligent eye, textbook conformation, and a huge trot. Charmer retired sound after racing at two and three and has been turned out on her owner's farm since. She came to us a little thin and rough, but she's bloomed wonderfully with the lush spring grass. Dressage riders/breeders take note. This mare has definite dressage/jumper potential and would cross well with a Warmblood. Many of Europe's finest eventers are Standardbred crosses. Charmer had good driving manners at the track. We've ridden her once, and she handled it well. Charmer is an Alpha mare. She is at our Laura location, and her adoption fee is $300.
Jo Pa's Tyberchip: Calm black 5 yo 15.2h pacing gelding. He retired from the track sound and is ready for transitional training. We will ride him several times during his time at New Vocations. Chip is very easy to groom and work around. He has a good disposition and seems to get along with everyone. Chip should make a nice trail or pleasure driving horse. His adoption fee is $700. If you have questions please contact Anna Ford at anna@horseadoption.com.

Herolater is a 15.2h 12yo Stb gelding. I was purchased at auction with my back in excruciating pain. LCR treated me for a fractured pelvis. I spent almost 5 months in a stall. Then the day came when they opened my door and allowed me to go out on my own in a small paddock. I was thrilled, and felt great. I even tried to play a little. I'm sound now and ready to go back to work. I do know how to drive, but haven't done it in awhile, and I don't think I'd mind if someone rode me, too. Update:. Hero is in foster care and will be brought back in the spring to see about his riding, driving abilities and soundness. Until then, please be patient and wait for more updates. Adoption Fee: $500.00

Wisconsin

American Standardbred Adoption Program, 608-689-2399, asapinc@mwt.net for more horses and info. Adoption fees range from $350-$800. Horses located in Wisconsin or Illinois unless otherwise noted. Some photos at the ASAP website.

A Team Hall: 4yo Standardbred gelding. 15.1 hh. A Team is a bay trotter with a muscular build. Raced in Kentucky. Has been on stall rest due to a fractured sesamoid in January, but is now recovered. A Team is saddle trained. Please call the ASAP office for more information about this horse. Update (4/30): A Team is now at the ASAP farm.
Victory Buck: 3yo gelding trotter. Buck is on 30 days of stall rest for a broken knee, but is healing nicely. Current on Coggins and health certificate. Man the Ship: 3yo gelding by Armbro Cadet and out of Finely Tuned. Never raced, is very sound. Has a very good disposition, but just can't make the grade for racing.
Classy Topic: 14yo gelding, bay, 16h. Big horse with a big heart. Classy raced until February on two bowed tendons but is recovering. Classy is a gentle giant--a true magnet for children. Although not offically saddle trained, this patient horse allows kids to climb on his back and hang on his legs. Located in Michigan.
Mr. Fisher: 5yo gelding, bay. Mr. Fisher is a nice horse who needs some time in a pasture to recover from hard racing. He's on the thin side right now, but with the right person to bring him around, he should fill out nicely. He's experiencing some lameness from racing. Call the ASAP office for more details.
Murlys Choice: 2yo gelding, black bay, 15.1h and growing. Trainer Kenyon Walker worked with this horse and said that he just wasn't a pacer, and as a consequence, he wasn't registered. Good natured, this one will follow you around like a baby. Sound. At the IL State Fairgrounds, Springfield.
Jane's Fireball: 7yo gelding bay. Also trained by Kenyon Walker. Fireball wasn't fast enough to race in Chicago, but he is now ready for saddle training. Sound. Should be easy to retrain as he is an even-tempered guy. Also located at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.
Little Saturday Night: 8yo gelding whose bloodlines trace to Abercrombie and Nihilator! His body is more of a Quarter Horse build, but his head strongly resembles Abercrombie. His owner reports Little Saturday Night is an extremely intelligent horse who is good with people, sound, and up-to-date on all vacs, including West Nile. Please call the office soon if you're interested!
Arne: 8yo bay gelding, won $50,000 as a pacer, retired in 2000. All of 17 hands high - left hind leg has a hock that is slightly calcified and enlarged, but he has been ridden lightly without a problem. Arne is trained to saddle but is mainly a companion horse and he is sweet as sugar! Arne is just a big sweet teddy bear! Update (2/03): Arne has improved recently and is ready for a new home. Please come see this sweet guy!
Tristinette: 15yo mare. Purchased as a yearling for $16,000, this horse set records as a 2- and 3-year-old and raced out East. She returned to Illinois a few years ago and has been a broodmare, producing four foals, one of which is still racing after earning $100,000 so far. Her youngest is a promising yearling. Tristinette is approximately 16h, with white on her forehead and two white socks. Easy to handle, and sound. Use recommendations are to retrain her as a pleasure/trails horse.
Falcon In Flight: 8yo gelding, bay with two white socks and a star, 14.2h. Last raced in September, but Falcon pulled a suspensory and has been on stall rest since then. He needs about four more months of rest, but can be turned out in a small paddock at this time. He is a quiet horse with a good temperament. At the moment, he's on the thin side as a way to keep extra weight off his injured leg. Located in IL.
Incredible Future: 9yo 16h gelding. Future has been in the ASAP program since 1995 - he set a new lifetime mark at Springfield, IL as a 3yo before sustaining an injury to his leg that would end his racing career. He is gentle and sweet but can be dominant in a herd. He has not had any consistent riding for a year or more, so needs a firm but loving hand to get him back in gear. UPDATE (10/23): Future had the opportunity to be part of the ASAP clinic on October 18. This friendly and inquisitive horse was tied, groomed and tacked in no time - a perfect gentleman! It was evident right away that when Dave got up on him Future responds to ANY pressure on a bit - so I would say that an O ring or D ring snaffle with no curb chain or shank would work best on this soft-mouthed horse. He responded immediately and well to all commands, and can canter under saddle. Future loves being worked with and loves being ridden. UPDATE (5/3): He is now in Trempealeau, WI, at a foster family's home, and they report he is a wonder--actually, they call him The Incredi-Bull!
Bold Fanover: 7yo BIG, beautiful bay mare. She is a dominant horse and owner recommends an experienced person to begin her saddle training. Located in IL.
Weekend Weather: 15yo broodmare, dark black-bay. She has had many foals, and can now begin her saddle training. Nice temperament. Very friendly with people. In the pasture she will "mother" any horse who becomes her pal. This is a healthy and fat mare. Located in IL.

Wisconsin

Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation, Stratford, WI, phone: 715-687-5856, yukon@tznet.com. Horses located is in WI, unless otherwise noted. Some photos of available horses on the website: www.tznet.com/yukon.
Simon: 4yo gelding. He is 15.1h. Broke to harness and may also be broke to saddle as well. He has a beautiful healthy blood bay coat and is as easy to handle as they come. Well behaved. easy to handle, good with the farrier, he loads, ties, leads, you name it. We will need to be Coggins tested as well as wormed, vaccinated, and trimmed, and evaluated before we can let him go to his new home. So far Simon seems to be a great potential trail or pleasure driving horse. Simon does appear to have some soundness issues and will not be made available until he is evaluated.
India: 11yo mare. She is 15.1h and blood bay. India is well broke to harness and may be broke to saddle as well. She is road safe and easy to catch. India is shod on all 4 feet and is easy to handle. She is also in pretty rough condition. She is very thin, cut up and beat up, worm infested, and will need some dental work, weight, wormers, shots, the whole nine yards. Being that this mare has shoes on all 4 feet we have to assume she had been working right up until we found her and she is in no condition to be working. She does seem to be sound so far, but her recovery will probably take a while.
Miss Finis: 9yo mare retired from harness racing in 1996. She is a 16.1h bay. She is broke to drive and may also be broke to ride. She is great with the farrier, ties, loads, leads, you name it. She is now sound and healthy and looking good. Miss Finis is ready for her new home and has turned out to be a very nice looking horse as well as well behaved.
Brenda: 8yo mare. She is 15h, bay, and as sweet as they come. Brenda has gained considerable weight since she first got here, but still has a few pounds to go. Brenda's biggest problem is her feet. She had numerous abscesses and her feet had been neglected for quite some time. She also had a nasty injury on her back left leg from a kick through a pole shed. After some new x-rays and some examination it has been determined that Brenda is going to need a lot more time and luck than we first thought. It appears she had suffered a pretty nasty fall before we met her and her hips have sunken from massive strain. She also has considerable damage to her left rear pastern. Update: Brenda got over her bout with pneumonia within a few days time, but the problems with her hips and legs will take much longer. Brenda will be getting surgery done on her bad leg sometime this spring and then we will watch her to see how she comes along. In the meantime, there will be no more new info to report on Brenda.

Giant Boulevard "Boule"
-- '94 Stb gelding, 16.3+h, located in WV. Companion horse only, maybe able to do some driving, is sound at the walk, has carried a very light rider for lead line stuff, but it's unknown if he will ever be able to anything more strenuous than that. Bright bay, quit racing with an enlarged knee (allergic to injection and it blew up), but has improved much. The nicest horse. Needs someone to give him time to find out if he can be sound for pleasure riding or driving. This horse will be well worth the wait even if it takes him 2 yeas to get sound. Notes from the Foster family: Settled right down He's great with kids. Adoption fee is $300.
WhereTheMoneyGoes "Money" – ‘94 Stb mare, bay, 16.1h, sound, located in WV. Owner releasing her for breeding and would like to be kept in touch with. Donated because of downsizing. Used for racing, broodmare. Has not been started under saddle yet (hopefully soon!) and will probably need an adopter with access to a trainer. Level of rider: intermediate. Adoption fee: $1200.
Windsor's Dynasty: '85 Stb gelding, sound, 16+h, located in WV. Beautiful, son of world famous pacing stallion and race horse, Albatross. Beautiful mover. He is going to make a wonderful pleasure mount. He's limber, mental and physically flexible, sound and beautiful.
