| Boulder Creek and driver Ron Pierce scored an upset victory in the $525,500 Breeders Crown for open pacers in 1:48.1. |
Laying off fractions of :26.1, :52.1 and 1:19.3, set by Royal Mattjesty (John Campbell), Boulder Creek worked his way up behind the leader at the top of the stretch and came out well in to the stretch to pass him. The win in 1:48.1 was a career best and came by a margin of 2 1/4 lengths, returning $43.60 for a $2 win ticket.
Royal Mattjesty ended up in a dead heat for second with Peruvian Hanover (Jim Morrill Jr.) and Dr Drew (Dale Hiteman) was fourth and Allamerican Captor behind him. The 1-9 favorite Four Starzzz Shark finished seventh by eight and three quarters lengths.
Boulder Creek is owned by Cliff Siegel, L.S. Wasserman and John Fodera of New York and trained by Mark Silva. It was the first Breeders Crown win for Wasserman, Fodera and Pierce. "We weren't racing for a check, we were racing to win," said driver Ron Pierce. "We were in a real sweet spot and the horse felt real good. I was kind of licking my chops, but I wasn't sure what Mike was up to [with Four Starzzz Shark] back there. I turned for home, we had some room and the horse had plenty of pace."
"I don't know what happened," said Four Starzzz' Shark driver Mike Lachance. "It may have been the pace going to the half in :52. He was having a very tough time keeping up. There was just too much pace today. I don't know what was wrong, but he ws very hyper today. Maybe he has a touch of a cold. He didn't score down well at all. I couldn't get him calmed down, he was just too much on the iron."
