Michigan: Racing's state funding may be restored
Friday, October 30, 2009 - by John Pawlak, the U.S. Trotting Association

Columbus, OH --- The Michigan House voted on Thursday, 105-1, to restore funding for the Michigan Office of Racing Commissioner. The $2.5 million, however, must be approved in the Senate before the funds are freed.

The bill contains a provision to use simulcast wagering taxes as the funding mechanism. The state’s pari-mutuel tracks face closure on Nov. 5 if the Commissioner’s Office funding is not restored.

There is also a plan to restore state funding -- the amount not yet known -- for the state’s county fairs and the Michigan Sire Stakes.
