Metropolitan colt tops the Pennsylvania Select Sale
Tuesday, October 13, 2009 - by John Pawlak, the U.S. Trotting Association

Columbus, OH --- Sapphire City, a pacing colt by Metropolitan and out of the Justin Passing mare Spectre Almahurst, brought a bid of $27,000 to top the inaugural Breeders Select Yearling Sale, conducted Monday (Oct. 12) at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.

Todd Schadel purchased the sale topper, who was consigned by Nandi Farm of New Freedom, Pa.

Seventy-three yearlings, the bulk of which were bred to be eligible in Pennsylvania or Maryland, went through the ring. They sold for a total of $331,800 -- an average of $4,484.

Sam Beegle, one of the principles in the sale company, was happy with the result.

"(The sale) met my expectations, because I'm a realist. I knew what we had, and while a couple could have brought a bit more our sale topper brought a good price, and had three bidders after him till the end."

Beegle said that planning will begin immediately for next year's sale.

"The venue (the paddock at Pocono Downs) was great. We had a great crowd and we couldn't have been any happier."
