More than $830,000 in Super Night purses at Northfield Saturday
Wednesday, September 02, 2009 - by Keith Gisser, publicity director, Northfield Park

Northfield, OH --- Northfield Park hosts the Ohio Super Night on Saturday (Sept. 5) with over $830,000 in purses available in eight $80,000 Ohio Sires Stakes finals, four Scarlet and Gray Stakes for veteran Ohio-breds and two Open events. First race post time for the 15-race card is 7 p.m. (EDT).

Things will be contentious from the start as undefeated 2-year-old trotting filly Jesse’s Messenger (6-for-6, $68,750) takes on Victory Is Coming, who has banked $44,493 while winning her last four. Hawk’s Cry Electra puts her undefeated five-race winning streak on the line in the $80,000 freshman filly pace, while the 2-year-old colt pacers feature a balanced field in which any of the eight have a legitimate chance to take home the $40,000 winner’s share of the purse. Cool Colby is the likely favorite in the 2-year-old colt trot off his impressive win at Northfield on August 29.

The 3-year-olds are headlined by the colt pacers and that competitive group features a showdown between Dance With Dan, a winner of seven races this year, and six-time winner Cruisin Sage, who has the rail. Roserun Keepsake has dominated against Ohio-breds this year, but the 3-year-old trotting filly drew the outside post eight, making things a bit more interesting for the fans, if not for her connections. The sophomore trotting colt final appears wide open, while the 3-year-old pacing fillies are headed by Best Of Ball, a winner of six of seven and $52,137 this year, and Lavish Liz, a six-time winner who has not been worse than third in 14 seasonal starts while banking $53,075.

The $39,500 Scarlet And Gray Mare Trot features track record holder and former champion Whotookwhat, while the $46,000 Scarlet And Gray Horse Trot features world champion Dunkster. He will have his work cut out for him in a classy field of nine that includes This Sands Hot. The $48,000 Scarlet And Gray Horse Pace, also with a field of nine, is highly competitive and well-balanced, while Osbornes Gypsy may have the edge in the $42,500 Mare Pace, off an impressive local qualifying race last week.
