Racing Roundup: The rich get richer
Monday, August 31, 2009 - from harness publicists from around North America

Monday’s (August 31) edition of Racing Roundup features stories from The Meadows, Harrington Raceway, Plainridge Racecourse and Monticello Raceway.

Bobnoxious starts on his second million at the Meadows

Meadow Lands, PA --- Bobnoxious, one of harness racing’s newest millionaires, kept right on rolling to the next milestone on Monday at The Meadows, as he converted a pocket trip to victory in the $27,500 Preferred Handicap pace.

Aaron Merriman sent Bobnoxious for the lead, but the 9-year-old son of Nude Beach--Blue Autumn settled into the pocket behind the 1-5 favorite, Noble Falcon. They raced that way until mid-stretch when Bobnoxious blew by in the “Lightning Lane” to down Noble Falcon by one-half length, in 1:53. Real Samart was a closing third.

Bobnoxious eclipsed the $1 million mark with a July 31 win at The Meadows, and now has earned $1,032,486. Paul Kennedy, Jr. trains Bobnoxious for Daniel and Thomas Courtemanche.

Merriman and Dave Palone recorded driving triples on the 14-race card.

Art Director moved closer to becomming a millionaire with his win on Monday
The 8-year-old Artiscape stallion has now banked nearly $960,000 in his career. Trained by Bobby Clark, “Art” sat a perfect pocket trip behind the pacesetter, Sniper Hall, who set fractions of :27.4, :56.4 and 1:25.2.

Art Director then found room down the passing lane and passed Sniper Hall in deep stretch for the win. Next Adventure, who was first-over at the half-mile mark, finished third.

Drivers Brandon Givens and George Dennis each won three races on the program.

Fall meeting begins at Plainridge Racecourse

Norwood, MA --- The Fall meeting started right on schedule at Plainridge Racecourse under beautiful skies with the temperature hovering around 70 and you couldn't have asked for a better day.

The nine-race card went off without a hitch and when it was over, drivers Drew Campbell, Mike Eaton and D.T. Sumner all started the meet with two wins and trainer Dawn Anderson also put up two wins.

The most exciting race of the day was the $10,000 elimination race for the Stan Bergstein Pace which was timed in 1:54.3, with a neck separating the top three finishers, after coming off a half in :55.

The winner was part of an entry owned by James Behrendt and paid $6.20. The winner was Harlingen Hanover, trained and driven by Roland Sears III. The other half of the entry, St David Hanover, who finished third, is trained by Cynthia Milano and was driven by her regular driver Barry Segel. Rounding out the top three and finishing second was Midnight Lawyer, trained by Nancy Longobardi with driver Kevin Switzer in the bike.

The $25,000 final will be held next Monday.

Winbak Delight cops Mares Preferred at Monticello

Monticello, NY --- For the second time in the last three weeks Winbak Delight has been victorious in the Mares Preferred Handicap Pace at Monticello Raceway. The daughter of Bettor’s Delight scored a 1:58.2 decision on Monday afternoon with Mike Micallef at the controls.

Handicapped and assigned post position seven Winbak Delight started from post six -- due to a scratch -- and as the gate sprung Micallef sent her to the front but they didn’t see the pylons until Bruce Aldrich, Jr. and Miss Chris yielded at the quarter which was paced in :28.2.

From there it was catch me if you can as Winbak Delight held strong for most of the mile, that is, until the top of the stretch when My Fine Lady and Jimmy Marohn, Jr. came calling. In the lane, the two mares raced head-to-head to the finish with Winbak Delight prevailing by a neck at the wire. Three lengths back in third place was Bedrock Motel driven by Kyle DiBenedetto.

Trained by Gary Messenger for Ken Weckstein and Richard Rubin, Winbak Delight paid $8.20 for win. The victory was the mare’s sixth in 19 starts which raised her seasonal bankroll to $49,710.
