Late closers for 2-year-olds at Tioga

Nichols, NY -- It’s Only Roni and Jimmy Marohn Jr. took home the first division of New York late closers on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 30) at Tioga Downs.

The 2-year old daughter of Noble Ability-Theoneandonlyroni cruised to the front from post position 2 through fractions of 28.1, 59, and 1:29.2 before sprinting home in 27.4 to win in 1:57.1. The mile was a new lifetime mark for It’s Only Roni, who is trained by Joseph Robbins Jr. for owner-breeder Francis Feely of Avoca, N.Y.

It was the fifth win in nine seasonal starts for the 2-year old pacing filly, who with the victory increased her seasonal earnings to more than $20,000.

Taking home the second division and also breaking her maiden victory was JK’s Dream Angel in a lifetime best of 2:01.1. Billy Dobson steered the 2-year old daughter of Dream Away-Society Angel from post position 3 and cut through fractions of 29.1, 1:01.1, and 1:31.1 before turning away the pressure from Gifted Sarah through the stretch. It was the first win in six seasonal starts for JK’s Dream Angel, who is trained by Bob Gruber III for owner-breeder James Kustra of Buffalo, N.Y.

The third and final division of the afternoon went to Kash Delight and Billy Dobson who were listed as 1A in the entry for trainer Ed Hart. Dobson sent the 2-year old daughter of Bettor’s Delight-We See Kash second over behind stablemate Rock N Amber (Stephane Bouchard). As the field reached the head of the stretch Dobson tipped three wide and circled past the field scoring in a new lifetime mark of 1:57.4.

It was the initial win of the career for Kash Delight, who is leased by the Ed Hart Stable of Middletown, N.Y. With the victory Kash Delight increased her seasonal bankroll to more than $7,000. Stablemate Rock N Amber (Stephane Bouchard) hung on for second despite doing all the first-over work, while Bond Blue Chip (Jimmy Marohn Jr.) shook off the rail late to get third.

Billy Dobson and Phil Fluet each posted driving triples on the afternoon’s 12-race card, while Corey Braden enjoyed a double.
