Lonesome Cruiser leads OSS winners at Northfield
Saturday, August 29, 2009 - by Keith Gisser, publicity director, Northfield Park

Northfield, OH -- With the $750,000 Ohio Super Night one week away, 2-year-old colts and geldings had their final chance to earn their way into the Sire Stakes Championships with three $16,500 trotting splits and two $23,300 pacing divisions at Northfield Park Saturday night (Aug. 29).

The first split ended with a surprising winner as Dan Charlino piloted Rona Randall’s Rose Run Lamar ($11.80) to a hard-fought win. The Trainforthefuture-Looks Like Dawn colt ground it out on the outside to post a lifetime-best 2:00.3 win over Lookslikefire, while favored Sing Jesse Sing ran into traffic trouble but finished third.

Sons of Jailhouse Jeese took the next two splits. Favored Cool Colby ($3.00) cruised to a 1:59.4 win thanks to a patient drive by trainer Jim Dailey. He let Ray paver and Chipariffic take control after leading at the quarter, but pulled the pocket heading to the three-quarter pole to draw off and win in 1:59.4. Oh No It’s Steveo closed well to get place money and Chipariffic held on for third.

The win was the fifth in seven starts for Cool Colby, out of Royal Two, owned by Keith Ross and Kimberly Dailey.

Chip Noble made a bold early move with Sharp Edge ($20.00) to upset the third race field. Pulling the first time up the backside, he cleared before the half and hung on to win in 1:59, a lifetime best. Noble trains the Jailhouse Jesse-Ten Queens colt for Robert Kauffman.

The first pacing split saw Chip Noble and Lonesome Cruiser ($8.80) stalk pacesetter Contraband through fast fractions before using the inside passing lane to get up for a 1:57.1 lifetime-best win. Show Me Glory was third.

Noble owns and trains the winner, in addition to being the regular pilot of the Yankee Cruiser-Lady Lonesome son.

The second $23,300 heat went to 21-1 Trick Man ($44.80) and Ray Paver in an impressive 1:55.3. The son of Mantacular-Vicki's Trick held off the fast-charging favorite Doc’s Yankee, who had to move four-wide up the backstretch, while Ab’s Attack was third.
