Phyllis Brickel, 91, dies

Columbus, OH --- Phyllis Brickel, 91, mother of noted racing official Herman J. Brickel, died June 21, 2009, at Liberty Nursing Center in Jamestown, Ohio.

Along with her late husband, Herman R. Brickel, Mrs. Brickel bred and raised many outstanding horses including Billy Dart, the 1982 Jug Preview winner, and Ami Song, the dam of the top trotter and sire Songcan.

The Brickels stood the Volomite stallion Peter Lind and owned the mare Princess Chief. Together they produced such standout pacers as former world champion Victory Lind, Victoria Lind, Linds Girl, Easter Lind, Sally Lind, and Princess Lind.

One of Princess Chief’s daughters that the Brickels bred and raised was Princess Best, the second dam of the champion racehorse and sire Abercrombie.

Another granddaughter of Princess Chief was Silent Katy, the dam of the Woodrow Wilson winner Carls Bird p,2,1:55.3 ($1.1 million).

Herman J. Brickel, a longtime racing secretary who is now retired, said, “My mother and father were farmers who bred and raised horses. A lot of good horses came off their land.”

Services will be handled by Powers Funeral Home, 12 North Limestone St., Jamestown, Ohio. There will be a service from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24. The funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 25.
